Support - Frequently Asked Questions

  • It is a single-use heart monitor that is applied to the chest to record electrical activity of the heart, capturing every heartbeat. Once the recording duration is complete, the device must be returned to the analysis centre in the UK (you will be instructed to either return by mail or directly to the clinic where it was fitted). A specialist team of highly trained Cardiac Physiologists based in the UK & Ireland will analyse the recorded ECG data and provide a report to a healthcare professional, responsible for interpreting the results. These will be communicated to you by your prescribing healthcare professional.

  • The CardioSTAT® monitor is available only when prescribed by a physician or healthcare professional. This may be through your GP, Cardiology clinic or stroke clinic. If you do not have a medical prescription for the CardioSTAT® test, you must talk to your doctor to get a prescription for a CardioSTAT® test.

  • Through HSE/NHS Cardiac or Stroke Specialists, or through private healthcare institutions . This may be applied in clinic/hospital or shipped directly to your home from the referring clinician.

  • Follow the instructions provided - this will include cleaning the skin and you may need to remove hairs using a razor. Do not apply lotion or cream on the torso (chest area).

Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the chest/torso (for example, a shirt). Bring a list of your medications.

  • You can go about your usual activities including sport but avoid excessive sweating and avoid sports that include submerging yourself in water.

  • Yes, it is possible to continue with normal daily activities, including shower. A bath should be avoided to prevent submersion of the device.

  • CardioSTAT® is available privately so speak to your private hospital institution for advice. Please consult your insurer specifying that this is an "ambulatory ECG test".

  • The button in the middle of the recorder enables you to report your symptoms when you experience them. Press it once when your symptoms commence. Do remember to record the type and duration of the symptom in the CardioSTAT journal that has been provided to you.

  • The event button in the centre of the recorder allows you to record your symptoms during recording. The button can be activated with a single, quick press. Pressing the button will not stop recording. Remember to complete information about your symptoms in the patient diary.

  • Yes. The CardioSTAT® recorder measures heart activity through the electrodes. It is normal that the central part of the recorder does not make permanent contact with the skin. This does not affect the recording.

  • If you are travelling by plane, it is not necessary to remove your recorder.

In the instance of going through the security checkpoint at the airport, ask for manual physical search (pat-down).

The metal components of the CardioSTAT® recorder could activate the metal detectors. Please make sure you have your patient diary with you and show it to security staff if they ask about the recorder and the electrodes you are wearing.

  • It is possible for security gates to detect the metal components of the CardioSTAT® monitor, be sure to carry your patient diary with you should this occur. The monitor itself will not be affected.

  • Your recorder is activated during application and records continuously for the entire prescribed duration. Following activation, no lights will illuminate, and it is not possible to stop recording prematurely.

  • If the CardioSTAT® monitor detaches from one or both of the electrodes, simply reattach it and note the time and duration of the detachment on the patient diary/log book that was given to you during device installation. If the monitor detaches completely, be sure to place it in the correct orientation by referring to the instructions provided with the device. If you have spare electrodes, please apply fresh electrodes to the chest after cleaning & drying the skin. To prevent the electrodes from becoming detached, wear a close-fitting T-shirt or vest during the night.

  • It is normal to feel a slight tingling sensation under the adhesive electrodes after application.

If you notice irritation or if you experience a significant and persistent itch, remove the recorder and the electrodes & OFIX adhesives. If in doubt, please contact your health professional.

  • Yes, you should always return the patient diary with your CardioSTAT® monitor, even if you have not written down any information. If you are posting the device via post, remember to include the patient diary in the envelope with the device. A list of medications you are taking would also be helpful for the analysis team who review your ECG recordings.

  • No, it is not necessary to visit a post office. When your recording duration is complete, place your CardioSTAT® monitor, patient diary and list of medications into the envelope provided and place into any post box.

  • Call the CardioSTAT support line on 0800 124 4864 (UK) or (+353) 16971821 (IRE) if you have any problems. Your envelope has been specifically assigned to you and your CardioSTAT® monitor so we will need to resend you a new envelope and assign this to your patient records as postage is tracked for safe return.

  • Your medical team will let you know how long to wear the monitor for - it is programmed automatically to stop recording after this time. There are a variety of durations available from 24 hours up to 14 days depending on your individual prescription.

  • You will need to remove the CardioSTAT® for your MRI scan. Once you've finished, clean the skin, allow to dry, apply fresh electrodes and OFIX adhesive disks in the identical area on your chest, and continue with the recording. Please add the time you have removed and the time you've replaced the CardioSTAT® monitor, on your patient diary sheet.

  • Keep the CardioSTAT® on your chest and if you have further questions, call Icentia support line on

  • If you feel unwell, please contact your GP or hospital clinic but if you feel it's an emergency, call 999 (UK) or 112 (IRE).

You can continue to wear your CardioSTAT® monitor but this is not transmitting any live information remotely - the ECG data is extracted retrospectively and analysed after it is removed.

IMPORTANT: You must follow the instructions given to you by the medical staff. If in doubt, please contact the hospital OR clinic where your device was installed.
